Install your mosquito net hammock safely: guide to attaching your hammock to a tree
The hammock is a popular choice for going on a light hike or simply relaxing in the garden. Nothing beats the pleasure of gently swaying under a tree while enjoying the nice weather.
Learning to hang a hammock only takes a few minutes. And for the most common places - trees, porches, balconies, and posts - you only need one piece of equipment. But how do you securely attach your hammock to a tree?
In this article, we will review the different methods for installing your hammock, including the types of ropes and straps to use, the appropriate suspension height, the distance between the ends of the hammock, and much more.
The suspension height
The first thing to consider when installing your hammock is the appropriate suspension height. If the hammock is too low, you risk touching the ground, and if the hammock is too high, you risk falling. In general, the ideal height for suspending a hammock is about 1.50 meters off the ground. This will allow for a good balance while avoiding touching the ground or falling.
The fixation
The attachment is also very important. Trees are often the best support for your hammock. Make sure to choose sturdy trees that can support the weight of your hammock. Avoid attaching your hammock to dead or weak branches. If you don't have trees nearby, you can use a freestanding hammock stand. Make sure the stand is capable of supporting the weight of your hammock.
Ropes and straps
When it comes to the ropes or straps to attach your hammock to the tree, you have several options. Ropes are often cheaper, but straps are easier to install and can be safer. Straps can also protect the tree bark from damage. The length of the ropes or straps should be long enough to completely wrap around the trunk of the tree and allow for an appropriate hanging distance. In general, a length of 3 meters of rope or strap should be sufficient.
Distance between the ends of the hammock
When installing your hammock, you should also consider the distance between the ends of the hammock. If the distance is too short, you may feel cramped in the hammock. If the distance is too long, you may swing too much and lose your balance. In general, a distance of about 3 to 4 meters between the ends of the hammock should be sufficient.
The Knots
To attach your hammock to the tree, you can use a bowline knot or a figure-eight knot. These two types of knots are commonly used for tying ropes. Make sure the knot is tight before hanging your hammock. You can also use carabiners to make the installation and suspension of your hammock easier.
Stability
Finally, before you settle into your hammock, make sure the ground is stable enough and that the hammock is properly secured. Regularly check the anchor points to ensure they are still strong and stable. Avoid hanging your hammock on sloped or unstable ground.
The 4 best ways to hang a hammock
1. How to hang a hammock between 2 tree trunks
What you need: hammock straps
- Find two trees that are 3 to 4 meters apart. They should be thick enough not to bend when you hang your hammock on them.
- Wrap one of the straps around one of the trees, then pass the end with the attachment points through the loop of the opposite end. Pull on the strap to tighten it around the tree.
- Repeat the process with the other strap on the other shaft.
2. How to hang a hammock on a porch or balcony
What you need: hammock straps or rope
- Identify two spots on the railing of your porch or balcony, about 2.5 meters apart. (You may need to do some trial and error to find the best distance.)
- Wrap one of the straps (or tie a piece of rope) around the railing at one of the spots. Pass the attachment points through the loop at the other end and pull on it (or tie the knot of your choice in the rope).
- Repeat step 2 with the other strap (or another piece of rope) at the other location of the railing.
- Attach your hammock to the two straps or pieces of rope. Lie down and see how it hangs! If necessary, make adjustments, for example by bringing one of the straps closer or further away.
Note: using the rope or straps of the hammock may damage the railing of your porch or balcony. We haven't tested it, but placing a towel under the straps may prevent this. You have been warned!
3. How to hang a hammock on posts
There are two main ways to hang a hammock from posts:
- With hammock straps
- With equipment
I will show you both.
With Hammock Straps
What you need: Hammock straps
- Install two sturdy hammock posts, spaced 2.5 to 3 meters apart. (Or, if you're lucky like me, find two wooden fence posts in your yard that are the right distance apart). You can also install just one and wrap the other end of your hammock around a tree.
- Wrap one of the straps around one of the posts, then pass the end with the attachment points through the loop of the opposite end. Pull on the strap to tighten it around the post.
- Repeat the process with the other strap on the other post.
- Attach your hammock to the attachment points of the two hammock straps. Lie down, make any necessary adjustments, then stretch out!
With equipment
What you need: 2 eyelets or hooks, a drill and drill bits
- Take two solid wooden posts, spaced 2 to 3 meters apart.
- Drill a pilot hole for your eyelet or hook in one of the posts. Drill the hole about 1.5 m from the ground.
- "Screw your eyelet/hook into the post. (I like to use a screwdriver here to leverage.)"
- Install the other eyelet or hook in the other post by following the same steps.
- Attach your hammock to the two pieces of equipment using carabiners. Hang on easily!
Advice I recommend installing the posts too far apart rather than too close together. You can always use a rope, straps, or chains to extend your hammock.
4. How to suspend a hammock on a support
What you need: Hammock stand
- Assemble the hammock stand by following the instructions. (In the video, I am assembling a common model of portable hammock stand.)
- Hang your hammock at both ends.
- Get in and see how you feel. Make any necessary adjustments, such as moving the brackets closer or further away.
- Attach your hammock to the two straps. Get in and see how you feel! Make any necessary adjustments, such as readjusting the straps to higher or lower attachment points.
By following these simple tips, you can easily and safely attach your hammock to a tree. Enjoy your suspended hammock and relax outdoors!
